eMusic used some great ideas, and who knows?
For the “niche” taste,though, I think the successful model will harness those ideas in pursuit of a Nonesuch or Harmonia Mundi or Rounder model–an avowedly niche genre-related small operation, building a social-network-like following of devotees.

…same as the name-your-own-price thing with In Rainbows. Whether or not the band makes more money, the per-unit price is an issue.

I get the feeling that eMusic’s low per-unit prices were creating unhappiness just because they were there, regardless of whether or not there was money being left on the table.

but… there’s no actual, real world, tension between profitability and scale. the tension is artificial – it’s manufactured by Sony. It’s not Dylan starves were it not for Sony’s looking out for him…
